Got Your Windows Closed?

In Georgia, the legend says you must close your windows at night to keep it out of the house. Former South Carolina Poet Laureate James Dickey even wrote a poem about it.

It's called Kudzu. Introduced to America in 1876 from Japan, it has taken over the summer landscape of the south, covering more than seven million acres by some estimates. An additional 120,000 acres are lost to it each summer.

Giant tendrils of the great-leafed kudzu vine grow at the rate of a foot each day (100-feet a season) and creep silently not just up telephone poles and across the wires, but over everything that they encounter. If left unchecked, kudzu can choke the life out of valuable hardwoods and pines.

An invasive/exotic plant is a non-native plant in a specific region that demonstrates rapid growth and out-competes and displaces existing native plants. These plants are becoming increasingly more prevalent in our native landscapes and waterways. If not managed, these plants will displace not only our natural vegetation, but the wildlife that depends on it. The damage to our natural ecosystems could be irreversible.

Throughout the United States, new areas are being discovered each year with invasive and exotic plants such as ...
